I’ve noticed that Windows File Explorer is no longer displaying album artwork thumbnails for my MP3 files. Previously, many of these files showed their cover art correctly, but now they only appear with generic music icons.
The issue seems inconsistent because some files may contain embedded artwork while others don’t, and I’m not sure whether the problem is related to Windows settings, a corrupted thumbnail cache, metadata issues, or a recent system update.
What are the most common causes of missing MP3 cover thumbnails in Windows, and what troubleshooting steps should I try to restore them?
This issue is usually caused by one of three things: missing or corrupted album artwork, Windows thumbnail settings, or a damaged thumbnail cache.
First, make sure the album art is actually embedded in the MP3 files. If the artwork is present, check that File Explorer is set to show thumbnails by disabling the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option in Folder Options.
If that doesn’t help, try rebuilding the Windows thumbnail cache and restarting File Explorer or your PC. In many cases, corrupted thumbnail cache files prevent album covers from displaying correctly.
If only certain MP3 files are affected, the embedded artwork may be missing, damaged, or stored in a format that Windows cannot properly read. Re-embedding the cover art often resolves the issue.
