How do I fix error, the disk you attached was not readable by this computer.?

Hi everyone,

I’m getting the error message: “The disk you attached was not readable by this computer” when I connect my external drive or USB to my computer.

The drive either doesn’t appear correctly or asks me to initialize/format it, and I’m concerned about losing important data stored on it.

Does anyone know what causes this issue or how to fix it safely without losing files?

The error “The disk you attached was not readable by this computer” usually appears on Mac when an external drive, USB, or SD card cannot be properly recognized. This can happen because of file system corruption, unsupported formats, faulty cables, or drive damage.

To fix it, first disconnect and reconnect the device, then try a different USB port or cable. You can also open Disk Utility on your Mac and use the “First Aid” option to scan and repair the drive. If the drive was formatted for Windows, installing NTFS support software or using a compatible format like exFAT may help. In some cases, data recovery software may be needed before reformatting the drive.
