How do I fix the macOS installation couldn't be completed error?

macOS installation keeps failing with “The macOS installation couldn’t be completed”

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction because I’ve been stuck on this for a while.

I was trying to update my MacBook Air to the latest version of macOS, but every attempt ends with a message saying that the macOS installation couldn’t be completed. The download seems to finish normally, and the installation starts, but after a restart it eventually fails and takes me back to the same error screen.

I’ve already tried restarting the Mac, downloading the installer again, checking that I have plenty of free storage, and running First Aid from Disk Utility. None of those have made a difference.

What’s confusing is that the Mac works normally otherwise. I haven’t installed any unusual software recently, and there haven’t been any hardware changes. The issue only appears when I try to install the update.

Has anyone run into this before? I’m wondering if this is usually caused by a corrupted installer, a disk issue, a network problem during installation, or something else entirely.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The “macOS installation couldn’t be completed” error can occur for several reasons, including insufficient storage space, a corrupted installer, disk errors, network issues during installation, or an incorrect system date and time.

A good first step is to restart the Mac and try the installation again. If the error persists, boot into macOS Recovery and use Disk Utility’s First Aid feature to check the startup disk for errors. Also make sure you have enough free storage available for the installation.

If you’re installing from a downloaded installer, consider deleting it and downloading a fresh copy, as the installer itself may be corrupted. For older macOS versions, verifying that the system date and time are correct can also help resolve installation failures.

If none of these steps work, reinstalling macOS through Recovery Mode is often successful and typically preserves your personal data, though having a current backup is always recommended before making major system changes.
