I need to format a document in Google Docs and specifically want to apply a hanging indent, but I’m not sure of the correct steps to do it properly.
What’s the easiest way to create a hanging indent in Google Docs? I’m looking for a simple method using either the ruler or the formatting menu, and I’d also like to know if there’s a way to set it as a default style for citations or reference lists.
To create a hanging indent in Google Docs, first highlight the paragraph or citation you want to format.
Using the Formatting Menu
Click Format → Align & Indent → Indentation Options.
Under Special Indent, select Hanging.
Choose the indent size (typically 0.5 inches).
Click Apply.
Using the Ruler
Make sure the ruler is visible (View → Show Ruler).
Select the text.
On the ruler, drag the left indent marker (blue rectangle) to the desired position.
Then drag the first-line indent marker (blue triangle) back to the left margin.
Can You Set It as Default?
Google Docs doesn’t offer a built-in way to make hanging indents the default for all documents. However, you can create a template with hanging indents already applied and reuse it for citations or reference lists.
