How to know if someone blocked you on iMessage?

  • 0

I’ve been trying to figure out whether someone has blocked me on iMessage, but I’m not sure if the signs I’m seeing actually mean anything.

Normally, messages to this person would show as delivered pretty quickly. Recently, my messages don’t seem to be getting any response, and I’m noticing some differences compared to before. I’ve read online that things like the “Delivered” status disappearing, messages being sent as SMS instead of iMessage, or calls going straight to voicemail could be signs of being blocked, but I’ve also seen people say there are other explanations.

For those who know how iMessage works, is there any reliable way to tell if you’ve been blocked? Are there specific indicators that strongly suggest it, or is it impossible to know for sure?

I’d appreciate any clarification, especially from anyone who has experienced this firsthand.

There isn’t a reliable or official way to know if someone has blocked you on iMessage, because Apple doesn’t provide any confirmation or notification for it. Most of the “signs” people mention are only indirect clues and can happen for several different reasons.

For example, if you stop seeing Delivered, it doesn’t automatically mean you’ve been blocked. It could also mean the other person has no internet connection, has turned off iMessage, changed devices, or is simply not using their phone. The same goes for messages sending as SMS (green bubbles) instead of iMessage (blue bubbles).

Calls going straight to voicemail is another commonly mentioned sign, but that alone isn’t conclusive either, Do Not Disturb, airplane mode, or a switched-off phone can produce the same result.

In practice, there’s no combination of indicators that can confirm a block with certainty. iMessage is designed this way specifically to protect privacy, so the most you can usually conclude is that communication has changed or stopped, not why.
