What is software audio console used for?

I recently came across the term “software audio console” and I’m trying to understand its actual purpose and where it is commonly used. Is it mainly for controlling sound settings, mixing audio, managing microphones and speakers, or something more advanced like live streaming and music production? I’d also like to know how it differs from a physical audio mixer and which users typically need it.

A software audio console is used to mix, control, and process audio digitally on a computer. It helps manage inputs like microphones, instruments, and media playback while adjusting volume, EQ, effects, and routing for live sound, broadcasting, recording, and streaming. It’s basically a virtual version of a traditional hardware mixing console with more flexibility and automation features.
