I noticed a small black line on my monitor. Is it a sign of a damaged screen, a dead pixel or a display cable issue and how can I fix it?

A small black line on a monitor usually means the display panel is faulty.

In cases I’ve seen this happen when some pixels inside the LCD or OLED panel stop working.

This creates a fixed line that doesn’t go away.

It can be vertical or horizontal.

The line can appear if the screen gets damaged, hit or worn out over time.

Even if the screen looks fine otherwise the line can still show up.

One way to check if its a hardware issue is to take a screenshot.

If the line isn’t in the screenshot but is, on the screen the monitors hardware is the problem.

It’s not the graphics card or software.

Usually this problem can’t be fixed at home.

You might need to replace the panel or get a monitor.

Whether you’re looking at a faint vertical line of white pixels on your screen, a vertical line of black pixels, or anything else, it is likely related to a problem either with your computer’s hardware or its software, relating to how images are displayed. The first thing that you’ll need to consider is whether you see the black line on startup, or if the line of pixels will only show up when you launch the operating system of your computer. This step will not require much at all.

The second thing that you can try if you happen to see the line of pixels after launching your operating system is to simply try and update the drivers to your graphics card-you may also need to re install your drivers altogether in order for it to be successful.

For users with a desktop monitor, check your monitor’s display cable. Make sure that the display cable is plugged in correctly, and if necessary, test a different display cable and also a different output on your graphics card. Test if the same line shows up on a different monitor. If it is, then it means the monitor or screen on your laptop is damaged. If the black line still shows up on a different monitor, then you will likely have to have your monitor or laptop screen replaced, by taking the laptop into your computer repair technician.
