To lock your computer properly, use the built-in lock option instead of shutting it down. On Windows, press Windows + L or click Start > user icon > Lock. On Mac, press Control + Command + Q. This immediately locks the screen while keeping your apps and files open. Make sure your account has a strong password or PIN set. Also enable Require sign-in on wake in settings so the computer asks for a password whenever you return from sleep or screen lock.
