I recently noticed a black line running across my Mac screen, and I’m not sure what’s causing it. The line stays visible all the time, even after restarting the device, and it doesn’t seem to go away when I open different apps.
I’m trying to figure out whether this is a display issue, a graphics problem, or a sign that the screen itself is damaged. The Mac hasn’t been dropped recently, so the appearance of the line was unexpected.
Has anyone dealt with a black line on a Mac screen before? Were you able to fix it yourself, or did it require a screen replacement?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I’ve seen this happen before, and in most cases a black line on a Mac screen usually points to a hardware issue rather than software.
If the line stays even after restarting and shows up across all apps, it’s often related to a failing display panel or a damaged LCD/OLED column/row. That kind of issue typically won’t be fixed by resetting the Mac or reinstalling macOS.
In some cases, it can also be caused by a loose or partially damaged display cable (especially on laptops where the screen hinge area is under stress). If that’s the case, the line might flicker or change when you adjust the screen angle.
A quick way to confirm whether it’s hardware or software is to take a screenshot—if the line does NOT appear in the screenshot, it almost always confirms it’s a display hardware problem.
Unfortunately, if it is hardware-related, the real fix is usually a screen repair or replacement rather than a software fix. I’d recommend getting it checked at an Apple service center or a trusted repair shop before it worsens.
If you want, tell me your Mac model and I can give a more specific idea of how common this issue is for it.
