Why is my Windows key not working?

My Windows key has suddenly stopped responding, and I’m unable to use shortcuts like opening the Start menu or pressing combinations such as Windows + R or Windows + E. The rest of the keyboard seems to be functioning normally, but the Windows key does not react at all when pressed.

I’m not sure if this issue is caused by a keyboard setting, system update, driver problem, or something else. I’ve noticed the problem started recently, and it’s affecting normal navigation and productivity on my system.

Has anyone experienced this issue before or knows what might be causing the Windows key to stop working?

I’ve run into this before, and it’s usually something simple rather than hardware failure—especially since the rest of your keyboard works fine.

A few things you can quickly check:

Win Lock / Gaming mode – Some keyboards (especially gaming ones) have a “Windows key lock” feature that disables it. Try pressing Fn + Win key or look for a lock icon.

Sticky Keys / Filter Keys settings – Go to Accessibility settings and toggle them off/on to see if it resets anything.

Keyboard driver glitch – Open Device Manager → Keyboards → uninstall the keyboard → restart your system. Windows will reinstall it automatically.

Recent update issue – If this started after a Windows update, it could be a temporary bug. Running sfc /scannow in Command Prompt sometimes fixes system-level issues.

Try external keyboard (if laptop) – Helps confirm if it’s software vs hardware.

Also, test the key using an online keyboard tester—if it doesn’t register there either, it could be a physical issue.

In my case, it turned out to be a keyboard shortcut lock I accidentally triggered. Worth checking that first before digging deeper.
